Political Participation

What opportunities can you find for political participation via the internet. How many of the following can you achieve while sticking to your political beliefs?

Firstly: signing an epetition:
http://www.rtbu.com.au/01_cms/details.asp?ID=223
Queenslanders are invited to join the Petition. My message will be sent to the Premier, and a copy retained by the Union.
I fully believe in this petition and i hope that premier Bligh listens to all the petitioners. This is what i signed.

"Dear Premier Bligh,

We, the undersigned, are opposed to the sell-off public assets such as Queensland Rail’s coal and freight arms, the Port of Brisbane, Queensland Motorways and forestry plantations. These assets should be allowed to continue generating income for the State of Queensland and should be operated in the interests of the people of Queensland rather than in the interests of shareholders’ profits.

Up to 10,000 jobs are under threat from this decision with workers facing threats to their job security, wages and entitlements - especially in regional Queensland where Queensland Rail provides stable employment for thousands of workers.

We believe you and your government have a responsibility to the people of Queensland to retain public assets and services in public hands and we call on you to reverse this decision immediately."

It is a pretty strong argument that is constantly in the media at the moment so im glad i found that one.

Secondly "keeping up with the obama's" i tried to find out what obama is doing today! well i found this pretty interetsing blog that follows him and his political travels. Its found at http://blogs.america.gov/obama/

here is a screen shot of this site:

Today Obama is in New York meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. He also gave a speech saying that peace with the middle east is not an easy thing but that it can be achieved.

Yesterday Obama met with world leaders at the United Nations’ Climate Change Summit, President Obama said “no nation, however large or small, wealthy or poor, can escape the impact of climate change.”

This blog is written by Michelle Austein Brooks who is a U.S. government and politics writer who has covered three national elections for the American Government.

Members for parliament:

i discovered through the help of google that my local member for Southport is...Peter Lawlor and he has his own website...http://www.peterlawlor.com.au/index.php not very interesting stuff really he seems all smiles and no action but thats just my impression from his website.

ireport

ireport!
So in our class we made this awesome news report. and the site ireport allows us to upload our own news stories true or false. it is an attempt at opening up the scope of journalists to allow us all to become news journalists and publish what is important to us individually without letting the massive media barons decide what it is that we call 'newsworthy'. In another class my 2404 Culture, media and Society we had a discussion on whats is 'newsworthy'. I found this website really connects to this theory which has been debated for decades. I love the idea and theory behind websites such as this and it encourages us to not believe everything that we see cause it can always be false or from a different perspective. It really opens up the internet and the way that it encourages diveristy and openness in the news stories even if they are filtered they can provide new ideas, unknown stories and cool information previoulsy considered UN-newsworthy by commercial media.

Our movie that we made is not based on any credible information nor is it true or reliable.

Myself and two other classmates made this in the grounds of the uni, we came up with a controversial idea of the dealing of drugs on campus then used mid-shot interviews to make it seem reliable. I had a lot of fun using my phone (a samsung f480) to film these sections and June who was a pro at imovie on the mac's compiled it all together and we picked some music and effects to top of our awesome movie!
Enjoy!

week 6 and week 7 lecs and tutes

So we are going through some of Jason's websites that are posted on the NCT 09 blog. The first interesting site i have been exploring is lifehacker (http://www.lifehacker.com.au/design/). This website seems to contain a lot of useless info but some interesting stuff i found is about the

Top 10 Food Hacks, 2009 Edition.

This article talks about all these weird and wonderful ways of using food eg spreading butter on expensive cheeses as a way of preserving it. Another idea is to crush garlic with a rock/ stone instead of a garlic crusher. but my favourite idea of all is to melt down those gummy animals eg the natural confectionery company dinosaurs (which are my fave) and put them into holders in the shape of a shot glass and then you have some super yummy gummy shot glasses! COOL!

The second website i visited is the generator blog- http://generatorblog.blogspot.com/I found this website had some pretty funny stuff on it, including generators for almost anything. the one i loved the most is making whatever words you like into the font of twitter! here is my try!

Pretty awesome stuff. this may sound stupid but i have never really used the internet for anything other than the normal mundane study, facebook etc but this exercise is actually pretty cool! and as the lecture taught me, you have to use the internet and not let it use you.

Google MAPS!!!

i found my old house in sydney! it even has my car parked out the front and my sisters boyfriends car out the front aswell! it made me miss my home so much! but i love google maps thats so cool and scary too to know that people could be looking at our house all the time!

And now my google map that i have designed of my old neighbourhood in Sydney. This was a really cool excercise to do. It really opened my eyes to the possibility of what the internet can be used for.
