Online Essay

1501HUM Final Online Essay

Question 4:
What are the uses/limits of the internet in terms of politics and/or democracy? Should we rethink the nature of the political? What happens to the nation/state in the age of networks that have the potential to span the whole planet? What has happened to the idea of "community" in the age of networked digital media? Discuss with an example

The concept of democracy and communication of a political nature is one of the many ways in which the internet is used. This has proven to be very successful yet also still has many limits to the success of this use of new media technology. The idea of “community” has changed substantially now that networked digital media crosses all geographical boundaries and has endless limits to the places that people can connect with other people. Therefore the nature of the political and community values have changed due to this interaction with democracy and politics and the changing dynamics of online communities reaching all around the globe.

The internet, especially its main, the World Wide Web creates many opportunities for the concept of democracy and for political interactive and active involvement. Websites like Access2Democracy are available to online users and they provide the “study and analysis of e-democracy issues and the involvement of the citizens in this field” (Access2democracy.org). This gives people information concerning local and federal governments and their democratic efforts. These websites are a vehicle for mass communication and interaction yet the opening up of this link of technology to politics also has its limits and boundaries. The access to this form of technology is in no way democratic at all; it is based on wealth, status and education of which the population of democratic countries are not balanced. The costs of the hardware especially computers and charges of telecommunications systems like broadband and cable internet make access to this technology limited which doesn’t comply with the concepts of democracy; “So participation in this kind of democracy must be confined to those people who have access to the funds for purchase of computer equipment, and literacy in the technology to take an active role in information exchange” (Jacobs 1998). This relies very much on self education and personal interest if one is to search out political policies online or participate in democratic forums. Although many in Australia do have access to these technologies, this does not however mean that they are computer literate and there is little advantage in democracy when only limited parts of the population can be involved.

Participation in the democratic process is also limiting when linked to the use of new communication technologies especially the internet. Through studies it has shown that the people who get involved in democratic activities online are mainly the well-educated elite. The lack of literacy especially with new communication technologies reduces the participation and leads to people avoiding this type of involvement. There needs to be a push for people of all socio-economic backgrounds to get involved in e-democracy and political interaction online. “It is hoped this will be achieved by the production of a counterculture that stems from the new possibilities of technology.” (Mattelart and Piemme 1980, p328). E-democracy blogs like e-voting.cc allow more access and encourages this online participation through a comprehensive and understandable program of voting for people to be involved in. All individuals have a right to these forms of democracy yet the goals of e-democracy are not all that realistic as not everyone has the opportunities or knowledge to be involved. “The idealism around the Internet is not only the old discourse that accompanies new technology, it is also trying to change inegalitarian aspects of the social structure” (Thornton 2002, p 7).

The idea of “community” has changed, now that geographical boundaries do not limit the interaction on digital networking sites. Websites like Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/) and MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/) are increasingly popular due to the ways that they connect people from around the world. "In sum, online communities are enabling Internet users to build bridges to other groups and people, while at the same time deepening ties to groups and ideas with which people are already involved” (Horrigan et al 2001). It is these choices made by consumers that make these digital networking sites more like communities in the ways that they link people together and this has come about due to the desire to stay connected and to feel part of a community that has diminished within our current society. “To the extent that the desire for satisfying human connections is a permanent feature of the human condition, the expansion of choice was bound to trigger an acute sense of loss, now expressed as a longing for community” (Galston 1999). So to stay connected and involved the online communities like Facebook and Myspace provide this sense of fulfillment.

Online communities provide this basis of staying in touch with people yet expand the limits of this far beyond your neighbor or region and these new communication technologies still carry the values of a community by involving people with shared understandings and interactive relationships (Galston 1999). Nowadays on the internet communities are developed through common interests not proximity; “Life will be happier for the on-line individual because the people with whom one interacts most strongly will be selected more by commonality of interests and goals than by accidents of proximity” (Licklider and Taylor in Galston). The search for community has been satisfied with online interaction as it provides a basis for individualism and exploration that until now has been much harder to accomplish in daily society. "Because individuals — rather than households — are separately connected, the internet and the cell phone have transformed communication from house-to-house to person-to-person. This creates a new basis for community that author Barry Wellman has called “networked individualism”: Rather than relying on a single community for social capital, individuals often must actively seek out a variety of appropriate people and resources for different situations.” (Rainie et al 2006). This also changes the nature of the political with more individualism created there is a need for governance online that cannot be accomplished with the concepts of true democracy at the forefront.

The nature of what is seen to be political changes from government and governance controlling what we as citizens are allowed to view to an open environment where this mass communication allows for a huge sharing of information. The strong demand for communities and the need for active participation in online democratic forums open up a whole new challenge to governments that has previously been unnecessary before these new communication technologies were produced. "The advent of cyberspace presents tough new challenges for conducting political conduct. If nothing else, cyberspace leads states and societies toward the issues of e-governmentality in which many new means for conveniently arranging things and people through e-commerce, e-learning, e-medicine, e-community, and e-democracy must remediate the mechanisms behind the conduct of conduct (Jones 1993 in Luke 2004 )."

There are so many uses of the internet especially the World Wide Web for political and democratic involvement yet these are limited by access, literacy to these tools and participation. The nature of what is political changes due to the consumer push for online communities and the popularity of such community groups as Facebook and Myspace. Online communities give acceptance and interaction across geographical boundaries and make the possibilities for connections endless. The internet allows for communities to be developed through common interests rather than proximity and this in turn challenges our governments to accept the increase in this use of new communication technologies and encourage political interaction through online democratic forums.

ARTWORK!!

So this week we are required to upload some artwork well i have heaps of my photos on my computer from photography that i did at school and here are some photos that i manipulated. i designed these models from cardboard, magazines, crayons and dolls furniture then photographed them combining real life and the fake. They were originally used as an insight into a cultural phenomonen- that of consumption and the sociology of celebrity. I reallylove these photos which took about 3 months to create the finished product. As my majorwork for school i had them presented in A3 format on glossy paper that hung with wire, one above the other.

freeware apps!

So im in search of some freeware apps, i searched this term into google and came to a site called The Portable Freeware Collection it seems to be easy to navigate and gives thousands of available freeware apps which you can download. since im technologically challenged and have no idea what many of these are used for but i did realise that i actually use one of these everyday and thats utorrent, i have loved this program ever since i learnt how to download movies and music a few years ago. I find it really easy to use in combination with isohunt where i search for all the titles. I dont know what i would do without this technology and im not totally sure if its legal but i do love the opportunities it gives me to have the latest movies and tv shows that we normally wouldnt get in the cinemas or on our free to air tv until way after the shows are shown in the USA. Really gotta love the way that the internet allows us to download shows only seconds after they air on tv in America eg The Hills and Gossip Girl. And its amazing how it connects the world through shared interests in certain programs, it really makes the world seem much smaller and more accessible through these free program applications. I also downloaded the freeware app game called Stranded II which is pretty fun and i could waste hours on these cool things that the internet has to offer.
So i noticed that i forgot to look at the persona's website in the week 6 tutorial that i missed and my computer had trouble loading that blog post so i wasnt able to edit it and put it in the right place. But this person's website is SUPER cool. http://personas.media.mit.edu/personasWeb.html this website compiles data on the internet about all the Laura Valentines. definitely the most interesting thing i have seen all week! I would have loved to take a screen shot of this but im not on a mac at the moment and the website doesnt allow me to copy the image or embed it anywhere. But the major parts of the web that have things to say about Laura Valentine's are social, accidents, family and online. Very interesting stuff!

Now on to sketchcast: it claims to be a new way to express yourself. this has definitely been said about a million other sites so lets see what it has to offer. It allows you to sketch something and it replays it back to you. i loved this one:

Political Participation

What opportunities can you find for political participation via the internet. How many of the following can you achieve while sticking to your political beliefs?

Firstly: signing an epetition:
http://www.rtbu.com.au/01_cms/details.asp?ID=223
Queenslanders are invited to join the Petition. My message will be sent to the Premier, and a copy retained by the Union.
I fully believe in this petition and i hope that premier Bligh listens to all the petitioners. This is what i signed.

"Dear Premier Bligh,

We, the undersigned, are opposed to the sell-off public assets such as Queensland Rail’s coal and freight arms, the Port of Brisbane, Queensland Motorways and forestry plantations. These assets should be allowed to continue generating income for the State of Queensland and should be operated in the interests of the people of Queensland rather than in the interests of shareholders’ profits.

Up to 10,000 jobs are under threat from this decision with workers facing threats to their job security, wages and entitlements - especially in regional Queensland where Queensland Rail provides stable employment for thousands of workers.

We believe you and your government have a responsibility to the people of Queensland to retain public assets and services in public hands and we call on you to reverse this decision immediately."

It is a pretty strong argument that is constantly in the media at the moment so im glad i found that one.

Secondly "keeping up with the obama's" i tried to find out what obama is doing today! well i found this pretty interetsing blog that follows him and his political travels. Its found at http://blogs.america.gov/obama/

here is a screen shot of this site:

Today Obama is in New York meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. He also gave a speech saying that peace with the middle east is not an easy thing but that it can be achieved.

Yesterday Obama met with world leaders at the United Nations’ Climate Change Summit, President Obama said “no nation, however large or small, wealthy or poor, can escape the impact of climate change.”

This blog is written by Michelle Austein Brooks who is a U.S. government and politics writer who has covered three national elections for the American Government.

Members for parliament:

i discovered through the help of google that my local member for Southport is...Peter Lawlor and he has his own website...http://www.peterlawlor.com.au/index.php not very interesting stuff really he seems all smiles and no action but thats just my impression from his website.

ireport

ireport!
So in our class we made this awesome news report. and the site ireport allows us to upload our own news stories true or false. it is an attempt at opening up the scope of journalists to allow us all to become news journalists and publish what is important to us individually without letting the massive media barons decide what it is that we call 'newsworthy'. In another class my 2404 Culture, media and Society we had a discussion on whats is 'newsworthy'. I found this website really connects to this theory which has been debated for decades. I love the idea and theory behind websites such as this and it encourages us to not believe everything that we see cause it can always be false or from a different perspective. It really opens up the internet and the way that it encourages diveristy and openness in the news stories even if they are filtered they can provide new ideas, unknown stories and cool information previoulsy considered UN-newsworthy by commercial media.

Our movie that we made is not based on any credible information nor is it true or reliable.

Myself and two other classmates made this in the grounds of the uni, we came up with a controversial idea of the dealing of drugs on campus then used mid-shot interviews to make it seem reliable. I had a lot of fun using my phone (a samsung f480) to film these sections and June who was a pro at imovie on the mac's compiled it all together and we picked some music and effects to top of our awesome movie!
Enjoy!

week 6 and week 7 lecs and tutes

So we are going through some of Jason's websites that are posted on the NCT 09 blog. The first interesting site i have been exploring is lifehacker (http://www.lifehacker.com.au/design/). This website seems to contain a lot of useless info but some interesting stuff i found is about the

Top 10 Food Hacks, 2009 Edition.

This article talks about all these weird and wonderful ways of using food eg spreading butter on expensive cheeses as a way of preserving it. Another idea is to crush garlic with a rock/ stone instead of a garlic crusher. but my favourite idea of all is to melt down those gummy animals eg the natural confectionery company dinosaurs (which are my fave) and put them into holders in the shape of a shot glass and then you have some super yummy gummy shot glasses! COOL!

The second website i visited is the generator blog- http://generatorblog.blogspot.com/I found this website had some pretty funny stuff on it, including generators for almost anything. the one i loved the most is making whatever words you like into the font of twitter! here is my try!

Pretty awesome stuff. this may sound stupid but i have never really used the internet for anything other than the normal mundane study, facebook etc but this exercise is actually pretty cool! and as the lecture taught me, you have to use the internet and not let it use you.

Week 6 tutorial

Google MAPS!!!

i found my old house in sydney! it even has my car parked out the front and my sisters boyfriends car out the front aswell! it made me miss my home so much! but i love google maps thats so cool and scary too to know that people could be looking at our house all the time!

And now my google map that i have designed of my old neighbourhood in Sydney. This was a really cool excercise to do. It really opened my eyes to the possibility of what the internet can be used for.

Week 5 Lecture and Tutorial

Internet Delivered Films

Now that the internet is reaching many many more audiences than was once thought there is this big space to be filled by providing consumers with films and series that are seen only via the internet. I found this fantastic website that shows film festivals all around the world and also outlines and provides links to those which are only online as well. The website is called the Film Festival Source. . Not only do they vary in quality but they give access to amateur filmmakers all over the world who may be without the convergent and advanced technology that are required in so many of the worlds biggest film festivals eg Cannes film festival, some of the movies shown here cost millions of dollars to make and only few are provliged enough to have access to these resources and the opportunity to show their movies to a selective crowd of people. Whereas internet delivered films cover a greater array of people watching these films and contributing to the art of amateur film making. I am personally so excited that the internet has given amateur film makers like myself an opportunity to show the world our composition pieces and the access to upload these to online film festival websites.

Here are three of my favourite short films from a selection of online film festival sites:
1st: Passion for Cinema is an online film festival (pfc one) The online film festival for one minute movies.

2nd Movie:
another winner from the pfc awards:

and my favourite of all for its super clever concepts is also from the one minute pfc awards:

Who, What, When, Where, Why, How???

Screen Shots as Words
The pictures and shots of the motion picture can be described through these words in association with these screen shots from How i Met Your Mother.

Who- the close up shows us who we are looking at, our attention is paid to this character through the detailed closeup.

What- described through a mid shot as the action that the character is performing.

When- time is the hardest to capture on the screen. close ups or mid shots are best at depicting when this action is taking place.

Where- the establishing shot probably from a distance as a long shot to give a visual representation of where this is taking place.
Why- a big close up can reveal more about a character and their intentions or emotions.

How- a single medium close-up or a series of medium close-ups shows how an action is happening. example, from intrigue to investigation to shock and horror.

Week 4 Tutorial Scav Hunt!!!

Unfortunately i was unwell for this class so i am completing it through the instructions on the NCT 09 blog.

Answering Questions without Google!

1. What is the weight of the world's biggest pumpkin? How long did it take to grow?
Answer found from Wikipedia in the Pumpkin Section. In September 2007, Joe Jutras (of Rhode Island) obtained the title of world’s largest pumpkin with a cream-colored, 1,689-pound (766.12-kilogram) fruit. He is currently said to be working on producing a giant orange pumpkin, as orange pumpkins tend to be smaller and have thinner shells but are more desirable in appearance.

2. What is the best way (quickest, most reliable) to contact Lilly Allen?
In my opinion, i would advise that Twitter would be the most reliable as there are so many many other websites that claim to be her or in contact with her. the personal nature of her posts on twitter seem relevant to her and in my memory i do remember her saying on the David Letterman show that she uses her twitter account all the time. Her most popular twitter account with 31000 people following her is http://twitter.com/lillyallen123

3. What is the length of a giraffe's tongue?
I searched this question through Ask and it directed me to the website of the San Diego Zoo
They simply use their 18-inch (46-centimeter) tongues to reach around the thorns. It is thought that the dark color of their tongues protect them from getting sunburned while reaching for leaves on trees.

4. How would you define the word 'glycomics'? In your own words, what does it really mean ? What does the term 'seagull manager' refer to?
Wikipedia states that "Glycomics, an analogous term to genomics and proteomics, is the comprehensive study of glycomes (the entire complement of sugars, whether free or present in more complex molecules, of an organism), including genetic, physiologic, pathologic, and other aspects" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycomics). I think this has something to do with breaking down sugars in a body, relating to diet and the functions of all parts of our body in moving sugar and carbohydrates around the body of all living things.

Seagull Manager: Word Spy gave me the answer to this question it states that "(SEE.gul MAN.uh.jur) n. A manager who only interacts with employees to criticize their work or when a problem arises." (http://www.wordspy.com/words/seagullmanager.asp)

5. What was David Cronenberg's first feature film? Which of his films Had 'Blondie' in it?
This answer comes from a film website called closeup-film. He produced his first two feature films in mid-1966 and 1967: a seven minute experimental work shot in colour on 16mm, entitled Transfer ; and a fourteen minute, colour short with the enticing title, From the Drain . Blondie was in Videodrome in 1983 I accessed this info through IMDB.

6. When was the original 'Hacker's Manifesto' written?
The Conscience of a Hacker (also known as The Hacker Manifesto) is a small essay written January 8, 1986 by a hacker who went by the handle (or pseudonym) of The Mentor (born Loyd Blankenship). It was written after the author's arrest, and first published in the underground hacker ezine Phrack in Volume One, Issue 7, Phile 3 of 10. Today it can be found on many websites, as well as on t-shirts and in films. Found through wikipedia Hacker Manifesto.

7. Why do phone numbers in Hollywood films start with '555'?
Films often use the prefix 555 with the telephone numbers. i searched this answer through yahoo answers.
The answer that was voted the most popular was by James O and he said "They're playing safe. There have been cases in the past where a number was mentioned in a show, and people (having little sense, yes. I know) tried calling the number, and actually rang somebody's telephone.
The 555- prefix is not found in any regular phone number except for directory assistance, which as we all know is 555-1212
Thus, no matter what numbers you put after it, dialing any number starting with 555 will be a non-existent number. No worry about waking somebody up or tying up their phone line with pranksters."

8. What is the cheapest form of travel from the Gold Coast to Sydney?
As i used to live in Sydney i am a pro at searching for the cheapest forms of travel between Coolangatta and Sydney. i have always found Jetstar and Virgin Blue flights to be cheaper than trains, buses and cars! With flights from $39 for Jetstar and $45 for Virgin Blue flights.

9. What song was top of the Australian Pop Charts this week in 1965?
I found this answer at Wikipedia. Not sure if this answer is correct but I'm guessing it is a song by The Beatles. i tried other websites like top of the pops but it is a British version and the Top 40 which has controversy over whether it started in 1965 or 1969.

10. Which Brisbane band includes Stephen Stockwell on keyboards and vocals?
Stephen Stockwell performs vocals and plays the keyboard for Brisbane band The Black Assassins. I had to find tis information through a friend's blog as i couldnt find info through general websites like yahoo and ask jeeves etc.

Week 3 tutorial and lecture- Language of the Screen

Language of the screen

searching for the meaning of these terms???

ECU: Google search terms included: ECU, ECU language of the screen, ecu computing language
Incorrect answers came from these websites:
http://www.answers.com/topic/modula-2
http://www.computing.net/answers/programming/ecu-programming/12891.html
http://www.ecu.edu.au/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_control_unit
http://www.europechess.org/
and many more...

Actually means:
ECU-extreme close up
"Very small objects or areas or small portions of large objects can be photographed with an extreme closeup shot (ECU), so their images are magnified on the screen. Small machine parts, such as calibrations on a ruler or a match at the end of a cigarette, can be very effective when shown on a full screen in an ECU" (http://www.tpub.com/content/photography/14209/css/14209_340.htm)

WS- Wide Shot
"Typically shows the entire object or human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings. It has been suggested that long-shot ranges usually correspond to approximately what would be the distance between the front row of the audience and the stage in live theatre. It is now common to refer to a long shot as a "wide shot" because it often requires the use of a wide angle lens." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_shot)

MS- Medium shot
"In film, a medium shot is a camera shot from a medium distance. The dividing line between "long shot" and "medium shot" is fuzzy, as is the line between "medium shot" and "close-up". In some standard texts and professional references, a full-length view of a human subject is called a medium shot; in this terminology, a shot of the person from the knees up or the waist up is a close-up shot. In other texts, these partial views are called medium shots. (For example, in Europe a medium shot is framed from the waist up.)" (http://www.answers.com/topic/medium-shot)

History of Computing

The history of computing is long and diverse and spans a long long time! Some interesting facts within the history of computing include:
  • 1950's-IBM first commercially produce computers
  • 1960's-The idea of the Internet came from RAND corporation in the 1960's while this "think-tank" was considering nuclear war scenarios
  • 1975- the first PC (personal computer) is made yet does barely anything useful as it doesn't have a language
  • 1975- Bill Gates starts Microsoft in his garage to devise a language for computers to communicate with people. Computers today would not be the same without the input from Bill Gates and his company now one of the most successful and profitable companies in the world. Microsoft
  • 1978- Apple II was launched at the West Coast Computer Fair. Apple computers as one of the worlds largest computing firms obviously have a long history all of their own. This website holds some very interesting facts and a detailed timeline about the history of apple computers within the history of computing framework. http://www.apple-history.com/
  • 1990's- The World Wide Web is seen as one use of the internet so computers can communicate with one another

Youtube forms of convergent technology

This robot combines so many features of technology (cameras, wifi, voice recognition etc) and its totally adorable too!

Another example of convergent technology is this technologically convergent fish. it uses a huge array of technology including sensors so it can swim around and know where its boundaries are. it was designed by Essex University.

4 Examples of Convergent technology

http://www.rca.ac.uk/UploadedImages/apple-iphone-in-hand-thumb.jpg

This is the iphone, useful for calling, texting and facebooking people. It combines features of a computer and a phone combined for the ultimate in convergent technology and definitely one of the most popular forms of everday convergent technology today.

Another convergent device is the mini laptop. The most popular one would be the Sony Vaio as it is compact yet combines many many features.

http://media.pcadvisor.co.uk/cmsdata/news/109200/sony_vaio_p_mini_laptop_300.jpg

The Kulla is a 2-seater pure electric vehicle with a maximum running distance of 140km on a single charge. These hybrid vehicles are environmentally friendly while also making use of many different kinds of technology that are in normal cars. They are said to be the 'way of the future' and look pretty cool aswell!

http://www.treehugger.com/Great-Wall-Kunna-chinese-electric-468.jpg

Facebook and Myspace is another form of revolutionary convergent technology which allow people to communicate with friends across the other end of the world and also combines features like 'gadgets' and games all within the one social networking site.

Convergence Week 2 Tutorial

Convergence

Convergence refers to the culmination of technology into once device. Smart phones and computers have revolutionized the way we communicate. It is the interlinking of previously separate ways of sharing information which leads to this new way of interaction. I personally use facebook and i find it the easiest way of communicating with friends all around the world cause it costs too much money to be calling them all the time. Of course i really want an iphone aswell to make this facebooking addiction easier to handle when i am on the move!

Convergent Devices:
smart phones
computers-internet
social networking sites- myspace/ facebook etc

First Tutorial

Week 1, Tutorial 1,
Today we had our first class for new communication technologies, i learnt to create a gmail account and my very first blog. We looked at options for the layout, colour and design of our blogs and personalised them. I also learnt to upload photos to our account and the one above is of the Griffith University Village, my home. I found the most interesting part of this class was being taught how to link words to other websites as i previoulsy had no idea how to do this.

My first newcomtech post

My new communication technology class started today and we made a blog!
